Many things can cause tooth discoloration. The most common, of course, are stains caused by tobacco, tea, coffee, chewing tobacco and wines. Even eating otherwise healthy fruits and vegetables like apples can cause discoloration. However, these stains can be removed if the teeth are properly brushed and flossed. Other conditions that can lead to teeth discoloration are medications. Tetracycline is an antibiotic notorious for causing discoloration, especially in children whose adult teeth haven’t completely grown in. Antihistamines and high blood pressure medications can also discolor teeth, as can chemotherapy and radiation treatment targeted at the head and neck. Aging can seem to discolor teeth because tooth enamel wears away over time and more of the underlying dentin is exposed. Dentin is more naturally yellow than most enamel. Injury to the teeth can discolor them. Ironically, fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay, can stain teeth if it’s taken in excessive amounts.
There are many modalities available for teeth whitening. In many cases, a regime of dental hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing of the teeth, is enough to prevent discoloration. Avoiding food and drink that cause the discoloration in the first place, if that’s possible, is also helpful. Agents that whiten the teeth, like whitening strips, can be bought over-the-counter but for the fast and effective results we recommend the Blue Magic Teeth Whitening system available at Cosmetic Rejuvenation Medical Center. |
